The Bushman tribe is called the Wakindiga. It is a hunting-gathering group of only about 1,000 tribesmen. At the time this book was written, the "Digas" were the only tribe left in Tanzania who could continue to hunt with poisoned arrows. They are closely related to the Bushmen of the Kalahari in southern Africa, and the aborigines of the outback of Australia. They speak a "click" language, have a blue (Mongolian) spot at the base of the spine, and in other anthropological ways are considered true Bushmen, distinguishing them from the three major races on earth.
The Barabaig (or Datog) live in the Great Rift Valley and
are semi-nomadic herdsmen. They also are distinct from the three major
races, belonging to what anthropologists call Nilo-hamitic people.
They are descended from ancestors who migrated from the Upper Nile Valley
into east-central Africa. They are brown, rather than black, and do
not have the facial features of the negroid race. They are closely
related to the Maasai in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
