The Navy V-12 program was initiated about a year after Pearl Harbor in order to furnish combat ships' crews with badly needed junior officers.  Students wore enlisted men's uniforms and complied with all the Navy Rules and Regulations.  Most of them received the equivalent of two years college education, then went into the fleet as ensigns.  Some sailors in pre-med, like Dr. Dibble, were allowed to take 20-25 hours a semester and therefore by May of 1945 had 115-120 semester hours, enough to get them into medical school.

As the war wound down, those V-12 sailors who were still in the college program were sent around the country to serve as corpsmen in Navy hospitals, dispensaries, etc.  Dr. Dibble was sent to the Navy hospital on the Camp Lejeune Marine Base near Jacksonville, NC.
